Municipal Court Cases

Do I Need A Lawyer For Municipal Court?

Technically, no. In many cases a person who is faced with a charge in municipal court may choose to represent themselves. They may do so because they are wary of associated costs of legal representation. Some may choose to plead guilty because they want the whole process over and done with and think they don't need a lawyer. Self representation, however, is probably not the wisest choice. The consequences of a guilty plea can go far beyond a simple fine and can take years to fully resolve. These can include:

  • A criminal record

  • Incarceration

  • Increased insurance premiums

  • Insurance/DMV points

  • Suspended or permanently revoked drivers license

  • Increased fines

Self representation may result in harsher penalties than having the representation of a good lawyer.

Go With A Local.

When you hire a lawyer it's often best to choose one who is a local to the municipality. I'm based in Monmouth County and choose to limit my practice to Middlesex, Ocean, Union, Mercer, and of course Monmouth Counties. I focus on and have specific knowledge of the local laws and ordinances within these areas and have good working relationships with many of the officials within these locales. I can confidently represent in most types of municipal court cases within these areas.
